Gregg Court
- Scope.
- Old concrete broken out and hauled, base rebuilt, new front porch and a full width driveway.
- Result.
- Formed, poured and broom finished by our own crew. A complete front entrance transformation.

Waterloo splits cleanly into two kinds of concrete job, and they are almost opposites.
On one side you have the mature lots, Colonial Acres, Lincoln Heights, the streets around uptown, where the concrete is original and the trees have been working on it for forty years. On the other you have Laurelwood, Vista Hills, Eastbridge and the newer north end, where the concrete is fine and the homeowner wants more of it: a patio that was never poured, a widened driveway, a proper walkway instead of a path worn into the lawn.
Both are our work. What changes is whether the job starts with a hammer or a form board.
The tree canopy is the thing that separates a Waterloo job from an identical looking job one city over.
On the established streets the failure is almost never the slab itself. It is a root that has grown under one corner and jacked it. You can tell because the crack runs in an arc rather than a straight line and one side sits proud of the other.
That job is not a concrete job until it is a root job. We cut back what can be cut back without killing the tree, deal with the base properly, and where a mature tree is going to keep growing into the same spot we will say so and pour the joint where the movement wants to happen rather than pretending it will not.
Laurelwood, Vista Hills and the newer Eastbridge streets were built with a builder grade driveway and a back yard left as mud. Ten years on, the driveway is serviceable and the yard is the project.
Those are stamped and broom finish patios, walkways from the side gate to the back, pads for a hot tub or a shed, and steps down to grade where the house sits high. Because the base in those yards is usually disturbed builder fill rather than undisturbed ground, we spend more time on compaction there than the job looks like it needs. That is the difference between a patio that is still flat in ten years and one that is not.
A lot of Waterloo property near the universities is owned by people who do not live in it, and the calculation on those jobs is different. What matters is not curb appeal, it is not having to touch it again for twenty years, and not having a trip hazard with a tenant on it.
We are happy to price that honestly: heavier slab, more joint control, broom finish, skip the decorative work. Same warranty, less money, because there is no reason to sell a landlord a stamped pattern nobody will look at.

Usually, but not always, and we will tell you which before you spend money. The honest answer sometimes is that the root and the driveway both want the same space, and one of them has to give. We would rather have that conversation at the quote than after the pour.
In most newer Waterloo subdivisions, yes. The question is what the ground beside it is sitting on, because builder fill next to a driveway is often not compacted to the same standard as the driveway itself. We dig it, build the base properly and dowel the new pour into the existing slab so the joint stays tight.
For anything that gets a plow or a shovel, broom finish, sealed. Stamped and exposed aggregate both hold up fine and we pour plenty of both, but they want resealing on a cycle. We will tell you what the upkeep actually looks like before you pick, not after.
The whole thing on the concrete side: demolition, haul-away, excavation, base, forming, reinforcement, pour, finish, joint cutting and sealing, and the site left clean. One price, one crew, one schedule.
